A controversial immigration law still on hold 24 hours after the Supreme Court gave the green light for it to begin today, a federal appeals court holding a hearing over the Texas law known as SB4, which allows state and local authorities to arrest migrants suspected of crossing the southern border illegally and allow state judges to deport them. The judges appearing skeptical of the law – this is the first time it seems to me that uh, a state has claimed that they have the right to remove illegal aliens.
Texas Border Crisis
Governor Greg Abbott standing by the law, saying Texas is taking action because President Biden has not stopped a record number of migrants. What’s going on at the border is nothing short of catastrophic. Texas had already placed razor wire and buoys to deter migrants from crossing illegally, moves challenged in court by the Biden Administration. So far, in 2024, most illegal crossings have been in Arizona and California, a trend some border officials tell NBC News is due to the tougher policies in Texas.
Law Enforcement Reactions
Zapata County Sheriff Ramundo Delbos is in favor of the new law as he said, “I do support it. What we’re targeting is the violence, the cartel people, the violent offenders that want to come across.” However, in Maverick County, where crowds of migrants converged on Eagle Pass last fall, Sheriff Tom Schmerber has reservations on its phase.
Sheriff Concerns over SB4
The sheriff expressed concerns over the implementation of SB4, stating that his Detention Center is already at full capacity. He emphasized the need for more information on how the law will work before giving his full support. The situation seems to be more of a political dispute between the state and federal government, leaving local authorities in the middle without much consideration.

Alabama recently made headlines by targeting diversity programs at public colleges and state agencies. The governor signed a new law, SB 129, which bans all diversity programs in the state’s public universities and government agencies. The law, passed with overwhelming Republican support, is set to take effect on October 1st. Any program that involves what is deemed a “divisive concept” will not receive state funding. The governor stated that the move is to prevent the misuse of taxpayer funds to promote a liberal political agenda. However, civil rights advocates argue that the law infringes on the constitutional rights of students and faculty, as it is vague and could lead to discrimination.

Local Business Reactions
The owner of Chandler restaurant, Gadzukes, Aaron P, welcomed the investment and the potential increase in foot traffic it could bring. The UK government privacy watchdog confirmed the breach report, but details about the allegations were not shared. Big Cities Struggling
Across America, officials in major cities are facing a breaking point due to the record number of arriving migrants. The strain is being felt as they struggle to handle the influx of migrants in search of jobs and opportunities.
Small Town Tensions
In smaller towns like Fremont, Nebraska, the situation is quite different. With just 39 workers for every 100 job openings, some are encouraging more legal migrants to come in and fill these vacancies. The need for these workers is evident in the agricultural industry, such as the half billion dollar chicken plant that opened in 2019.
Local Perspectives
For young locals who often move away, leaving behind job opportunities in slaughterhouses, migrants like Vicente Hernandez step in to take on these challenging roles. Despite the hardships, Hernandez and his fellow Hispanic migrants endure the heavy work as they recognize its importance in feeding the nation and the world.
Community Changes
The demographic landscape of Fremont has shifted significantly over the years, with one out of six residents now being Latino. The growing Guatemalan community, led by Hernandez and his wife who are pastors, has brought diversity to a once predominantly white town. The increase in non-English speaking students in the school district reflects this changing dynamic.
Resistance to Change
While the state’s Chamber of Commerce advocates for welcoming more migrants to fill job vacancies in industries like meat packing, some residents in Fremont are resistant to this change. The town ordinance requiring locals to prove their legal status before renting housing has been supported by voters twice, highlighting the ongoing tensions and divisions within the community.
City Ordinance Debate
The city cannot always verify the information, but people say the law remains on the books to send a message. Councilman Paul Van Baron supports it. Citizens had asked the city council to do something, because it was pretty obvious that we were become a Haven for illegals. He argues slaughter houses, paying low wages to migrants, lowers incomes for Citizens and criticizes increased costs.
Concerns for Migrant Children
For migrant children at local schools, the sheer pressure of bringing in numbers of people has resulted in a considerable burden to the taxpayers, but city councilman Mark Jensen, who’s lived in the area since he was 10 years old, is against that ordinance. Its a bad look for our city and he says Fremont – needs to embrace change. Immigration is crucial. A lot of people that live and grew up here, dont stay they they. They move out its critical for us to uh to have the the people that weve got here back at the church.
Immigration Challenges
